As a professor, author, and speaker, you wear many hats. How do these roles complement each other in fulfilling your purpose?
Dr. Sasha: Each role allows me to approach my purpose from a unique perspective. As a professor, I nurture the next generation of leaders by teaching the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. As an author, I amplify my voice and share transformative lessons on resilience, gratitude, and healing with a broader audience. As a speaker, I connect with people in real-time, creating spaces for authentic dialogue and inspiration. Together, these roles enable me to guide individuals in embracing their full potential and living with intention, compassion, and courage.
You’ve authored nearly ten books focusing on resilience and gratitude. What lessons do you hope readers take away from your work?
Dr. Sasha: I hope readers walk away understanding that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back — it’s about growing stronger and more self-aware through life’s challenges. Gratitude, even in the smallest moments, can shift perspectives and create opportunities for healing and growth. I want my readers to know that their circumstances don’t define them; their response to those circumstances does. Above all, I hope they learn to trust their journey and embrace the transformative power of faith, self-reflection, and perseverance.
What else are you working on as of late, and what does 2025 look like for you?
Dr. Sasha: In 2025, I’m dedicating my efforts to expanding my impact as an educator, mentor, and advocate for mental health. I’m focused on advancing my work in clinical supervision, enhancing my teaching methods, and creating more opportunities to connect with audiences through speaking engagements and written works. My podcast, Unveiled Lenses, remains a priority as I continue to explore topics that inspire resilience and healing. This year is about cultivating meaningful connections, fostering growth within my professional network, and empowering others to embrace their potential.
For anyone considering becoming a mental health professional, what two things should they consider before taking that big step?
Dr. Sasha: First, examine your own mental health and emotional readiness. This field demands empathy, resilience, and a commitment to self-care, as the work can be both fulfilling and challenging. Second, consider your “why.” Mental health professionals need a genuine passion for helping others and the drive to continually learn and grow. Entering this field is not just a career choice — it’s a calling to make a meaningful difference.
As we approach Black History Month, what advice would you give to Black women looking to heal from past traumas and rebuild their sense of self-worth?
Dr. Sasha: Give yourself permission to heal. Acknowledge the pain but refuse to let it define your future. Seek spaces where your voice is valued and where you can be your authentic self. Therapy, journaling, and surrounding yourself with supportive communities are invaluable. Lean into your heritage — there is strength in the stories and resilience of those who came before you. Remember, your worth is inherent, not determined by circumstances or others’ opinions. Reclaiming your power starts with believing that you are deserving of love, healing, and growth.
How do you envision the future of mental health care, and what role do you hope to play in shaping it?
Dr. Sasha: The future of mental health care must be inclusive, accessible, and integrated with technology to reach diverse populations. I envision a system where cultural competence and trauma-informed care are central to every practice. My role is to continue advocating for equitable mental health services, training the next generation of clinicians, and creating innovative solutions that bridge gaps in care. Through my practice and advocacy, I aim to dismantle stigmas and ensure mental health resources are available to all, regardless of socioeconomic background.
If you could deliver one universal message to the world about resilience and self-discovery, what would it be?
Dr. Sasha: Your resilience is not a reaction — it’s a choice. Every setback holds the potential for a comeback when you allow yourself to learn, grow, and trust the process. Self-discovery is about uncovering who you are at your core and embracing that person unapologetically. When you combine resilience with self-awareness, you unlock a life that reflects your true strength and purpose.
Any additional insights you would like to share with us at this time?
Dr. Sasha: I want to remind readers that healing is not a linear journey — it’s a dynamic process filled with ups and downs, but every step is worth it. Don’t underestimate the power of small victories and daily gratitude. And finally, let’s commit to showing ourselves and others grace as we navigate life’s complexities. Whether through mental health work, faith, or personal growth, we all have the ability to create change and live a life full of meaning.
